It usually starts the same way. A quiet street, a familiar route, a dog you love at the end of the leash. Dog walking is one of the most recommended forms of exercise for older adults, and for good reason: it gets people outside, moving, and connected. But over the past few years, a series of studies from major American research universities has documented the other side of that daily ritual — and the numbers surprised even the researchers.
The findingsWhat the research found
A team at Johns Hopkins analyzed two decades of U.S. emergency-room records and found that roughly 423,000 adults were treated for injuries sustained while walking a leashed dog between 2001 and 2020. Most of those injuries followed the same script: the dog pulled, the leash tangled, or the walker tripped — and a fall did the rest.
An earlier research letter in JAMA Surgery, from a team at the University of Pennsylvania, looked specifically at Americans 65 and older. Their finding: leash-related fractures in that age group more than doubled in just over a decade — from 1,671 cases in 2004 to 4,396 in 2017. Nearly four out of five patients were women.
The researchers were careful to note what their data does not say: it doesn't say older adults should stop walking their dogs. The health benefits are real. What it says is that a strong, untrained pull on the leash is not a small thing — and that the risk deserves more attention than it gets.
It isn't only the leash
Talk to owners over 60 and a broader picture emerges. The leash is where the numbers are, but the same imbalance shows up all over the house. A large dog that greets guests by jumping can knock an unsteady person off balance in the hallway just as easily as on the sidewalk.
